Joint Position Error Test

This section explains the Joint Position Error (JPE) test, which evaluates proprioception by assessing a patients's ability to return to a target position after movement.

Purpose

Assess proprioception of the cervical spine. Patient attempts to relocate to a neutral head position position after movement with eyes closed.

 

How it works

The patient is asked to close their eyes, then attempts to relocate to their starting, neutral head position after active movement. Joint position error can be tested from flexion, extension, and left/right rotation.

 

Default settings

All four movement directions (flexion/extension/left rotation/right rotation), 3 repetitions per direction.

 

Normative Values

Normative values are presented with a bullseye target (0-8°), based on global absolute error (Mean: 4.0°) and standard deviation (SD: 2.0°).

The target has the following ranges:

Green: 0 to Mean | Yellow: Mean to Mean + SD | Red: Mean + SD to Mean + 2SD.
